Fires happen very often, especially in informal settlements. It is important that you know what you can do to prevent a fire outbreak in your home and how to get prepared. Find here a few tips. Check out also how to make a DIY fire extinguisher for your home and what you can do in case of fire.

13 Tips to prevent fire and get prepared

If possible: Leave always more than 3 meters between houses. Otherwise fire can spread easily

Know the local fire department number and save it on your phone.

Prepare a bag with your valuables that you can take with you in case of fire

Do not leave a burning stove unattended, especially if children are around

Don’t cook if you are drunk or very tired

Do not install curtains or other easy flammable materials near your stove

A typical but very dangerous kitchen setup.

Avoid plastic and other flammable materials around your house

Don’t build homes over water hydrants

Otherwise the fire brigades won’t be able to put out the fire.

Keep fuels in a safe space

Fuels should be stored in child-proof containers. Keep away from heat source.

Buy or make your own fire extinguisher

Install / become part of a fire warning system (e.g. lumkani.com)

Become part of a community-wide whatsapp group or start one

Reach out to your community committee or ward councilor.

Get fire safety training at your local fire station / get first aid medical training
